Mayor sends condolences to Cape Town's Catholic community on Pope's passing

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has conveyed the City's condolences to Cape Town's Catholic community following the passing of Pope Francis.

'On behalf of the City of Cape Town, I convey my sincere condolences to Cape Town’s Catholic community on the sad news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.

'Over the 12 years of his papacy, Pope Francis spoke often of the central message of Christianity being one of love for one another - reminding us of Jesus’s commandment: Love one another, as I have loved you. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples. (John 13:34).

'Pope Francis called on each of us to demonstrate Christ’s love for us in our own interactions and relationships with each other. He not only preached these words, but exemplified this message through the humility and grace which he always showed.

'It is significant that he passed away during the holiest week in Christianity, Easter, a time when we Christians contemplate the sacrifice of Christ and refocus on the message of His life.

'In this time of mourning the loss of His Holiness, may we be inspired by his life’s message and the example of Christ that he consistently drew our attention to and modelled,' said Mayor Hill-Lewis.
